The group had a verbal altercation and one of the men stabbed Redwood in the eye, court documents state.

Prosecutors argued Monday that Redwood had shot and killed Cannon in retaliation of his assault, and that he was identified as the shooter by witnesses and video surveillance in the case. But Redwood's defense attorney, Katerina Semyonova, claimed that the government's evidence is inconsistent, and that Redwood does not fit the full description of the shooter.

At the preliminary hearing Monday, MPD Detective Kenniss Weeks testified that Cannon was not involved in the assault on Redwood, but that the shooting was Redwood retaliating after being stabbed.

Weeks said Redwood yelled out moments before the shooting, "I'm going to kill all you m****r f****rs!"

Charging documents state that the day Cannon was murdered, a witness heard a single gunshot, then turned around to see a man with a gun chasing Cannon down the sidewalk before shooting again.

The witness then saw Cannon fall to the ground. The shooter then stood over Cannon pointing the gun at him before fleeing the scene, documents state.

The witness described the shooter as a black male, with a fade haircut, who wore blue jeans and a black puffy vest jacket. Police found a black puffy vest jacket in Redwood's apartment that fit the witness' description, court documents say.

The case is scheduled for a felony status conference on April 4 with Judge Rhonda Winston.
Ivan NatividadMon, 03 Feb 2014 16:26:04 -0500http://homicidewatch.org/2014/02/03/judge-probable-cause-that-dion-redwood-shot-and-killed-darius-cannon/Darius CannonDion RedwoodHearings Begin in Connection to Murder of Darius Cannon Last Aprilhttp://homicidewatch.org/2014/01/30/hearings-begin-in-connection-to-murder-of-darius-cannon-last-april/
The right side of the courtroom was crowded with "Justice for Darius" t-shirts, worn by the family members and friends of 16-year-old Darius Cannon, who was killed in a Southeast DC shooting last April.

Dion Redwood, 39, is being charged with first-degree murder in connection with Cannon's death. Redwood appeared in court today for a preliminary hearing before Judge Rhonda Winston, who recessed the hearing after less than an hour of testimony.

Detective Kenniss Weeks described the interviews she conducted with an eye witness to the shooting.

The night of the shooting, the eye witness was in a parking lot some 25 to 30 feet away, according to charging documents and Weeks' testimony. The witness heard the two gunshots, saw Cannon fall to the ground and watched as the shooter ran away from the scene.

The witness gave police a detailed description of the shooter, including his clothing, approximate height, build, complexion and hair cut.

Shortly after midnight on April 7, 2013, Police responded to a report of a shooting at 2726 Langston Place Southeast, where they found an unconscious and unresponsive Cannon laying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

Witnesses, surveillance videos and cell phone records placed Redwood at the scene of the crime, charging documents say.

Investigators believe they've found a possible motive: On April 5, two days before Cannon's death, Redwood was involved in another incident at the same location. Redwood was allegedly visiting his child's mother, who lives at the complex, when he was confronted by three black males, one of whom was 16.

According to prosecutors, Redwood had a verbal altercation with the three men in a hallway outside the home, and one of the men stabbed Redwood in the eye with what he described as a kitchen knife.

Police verified the incident with medical records and video surveillance. They also seized an Instagram photo posted on Redwood's account where he is seen wearing a white rag over his right eye.

The hearing is scheduled it to continue Monday at 10:00 a.m.

Charging documents are embedded below:

 Redwood Charging Docs (PDF)

Redwood Charging Docs (Text)
Kristian HernandezThu, 30 Jan 2014 19:26:30 -0500http://homicidewatch.org/2014/01/30/hearings-begin-in-connection-to-murder-of-darius-cannon-last-april/Darius CannonDion RedwoodDion Redwood Arrested in April Shooting Death of Darius Cannonhttp://homicidewatch.org/2014/01/03/dion-redwood-arrested-in-april-shooting-death-of-darius-cannon/
A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the April shooting death of DC teen Darius Cannon.

The suspect, identified by police as Dion Redwood of District Heights, Maryland, is expected to be charged with first-degree murder while armed.

A press release from MPD is after the jump.

January 3, 2014

Arrest Made in Homicide: 2700 Block of Langston Place, SE

(Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced that an arrest has been made in the homicide which occurred in the 2700 block of Langston Place, Southeast.

On Sunday, April 7, 2013 at approximately 12:37 am, units from the Seventh District responded to the 2700 block of Langston Place, SE, for the report of a shooting.
