She later died at a local hospital.

According to charging documents, a surveillance video shows Coleman, 36, coming in contact with Reed and Reed's friend outside of Macombo Lounge, a strip club.

A witness told police that Coleman attacked Reed as she attempted to get into the right rear passenger side of a burgundy vehicle, documents say. Reed then fell to the ground, while Coleman and another man began fighting, the witness said.

Court documents say the witness told Reed to get in the car, but they soon realized that Reed had been stabbed in the chest. As she tried to walk to the car she fell forward, striking the car door.

Coleman is scheduled for a status hearing Oct. 14 at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Jennifer Anderson.

A copy of the indictment is below:
Imari WilliamsThu, 11 Sep 2014 16:09:09 -0400http://homicidewatch.org/2014/09/11/michael-coleman-indicted-in-the-murder-of-candance-reed/Candance ReedMichael Anthony ColemanProbable Cause Found in NW DC Stabbing Death of Candance Reedhttp://homicidewatch.org/2014/01/24/michael-coleman-charged-with-second-degree-murder/
Michael Anthony Coleman, 36, was ordered held Friday on a charge of second-degree murder. Prosecutors say he fatally stabbed Candance Reed on November 15, 2013.

At the preliminary hearing Coleman's attorney, Nikki Lotz, said Coleman's actions were in self-defense but Judge Jennifer Anderson called Coleman the first agressor.

Still, MPD Detective Josh Branson said Reed appeared to have been stabbed "accidentally."

Principal evidence at the hearing was a one minute surveillance video taken outside the Macombo Lounge at 5335 Georgia Ave. Northwest shortly before Reed was stabbed. The video shows Coleman coming in contact with Reed and Reed's boyfriend, Branson said. They fought and Reed was stabbed.

“The defendant brought a knife to a fist fight,” Anderson said in finding probable cause in the case.

Reed's family says that the man with Reed was not her boyfriend and that the two were not romantically involved.

Coleman's family and friends attended the hearing and wrote letters to the court saying that Coleman is an important part of his family, community and an excellent employee. Anderson declined to release him from custody in the case based on the severity of the charge as well as previous convictions from 1997.

This story has been updated to include information from Reed's family about Reed's relationship with those with her when she was stabbed.
Kristian HernandezFri, 24 Jan 2014 19:08:33 -0500http://homicidewatch.org/2014/01/24/michael-coleman-charged-with-second-degree-murder/Candance ReedMichael Anthony ColemanWeekend Read: A Mother's Griefhttp://homicidewatch.org/2013/11/24/weekend-read-a-mothers-grief/
The Washington Post reports on the stabbing death of Candance Reed who was killed on November 15 outside of a club in the 5300 block of Georgia Avenue NW after a dispute at her friend's birthday party.

The story follows the experiences that Reed's mother, JoAnn Lee, has had in the past week since her daughter's death.

JoAnn Lee carries a folder with pictures of her daughter. Candance Reed, dead at age 40, lying on a gurney in the D.C. morgue, a blue blanket pulled back to expose her face, her eyes closed, bruises visible on her cheek, chin and lips. Hidden from view are the stab wounds to her chest.

The 66-year-old Lee flew in from Ohio to claim the body of her daughter, killed early Friday outside the Macombo Lounge strip club in 16th Street Heights. Lee often took the morbid picture out during an interview with a small group of relatives. “I want to see my baby,” she explained.

“I can’t believe she died this way,” Lee said. “She was a good girl. No one deserves what happened to her. God gives life. God takes it away. Not us.” Of the D.C. police, Lee said: “I just hope they do their job well. I want to see justice.”

Ivan NatividadSun, 24 Nov 2013 10:33:32 -0500http://homicidewatch.org/2013/11/24/weekend-read-a-mothers-grief/Candance ReedMichael Coleman Held in Stabbing Death of Candance Reedhttp://homicidewatch.org/2013/11/22/michael-coleman-held-in-stabbing-death-of-candance-reed/
Judge Lori Parker ordered Michael Coleman held Friday in connection with last Friday's stabbing death of 40 year-old Candance Reed.
