Neal told police that Young admitted to killing Wingfield, then swung a knife at Neal when Neal reached for a phone.

On Friday, Metropolitan Police Detective Jeffrey Weber testified that a medical examiner in the case gave a "conservative estimate" that Young was struck 28 times, including several times after a plastic bag was tied over Young's head.

In an interview with police, Neal said first said that he left Young's body entirely naked except for the plastic bag to contain bleeding from Young's head. Later, Neal said that he also left Young wearing a pair of socks, Weber said Friday.

According to Weber, Young was found in the attic of the house entirely nude except for the plastic bag. Police also found a D.C. identification card for Wingfield in the attic, Weber said.

Police found Wingfield on June 17 under a disturbed pile of dirt, covered by a pile of bricks and a rickshaw bicycle after a cadaver dog indicated the possibility of human remains in the area, Weber said. According to Weber, Wingfield was "entirely nude except for a pair of socks."

The last known contact with Wingfield was on May 28, Weber said Friday. Wingfield's grandmother filed a missing person's report on June 3.

However, Weber said that on June 4, a witness in the case received a text message from Wingfield's phone that said "something to the effect of, 'I'm going to Europe.'"

Before Young's death, Weber said there was "no evidence of prior animosity" between the two men, though a year ago, Young was arrested for assaulting Neal. According to Neal, Young came at him with a knife after "some small disagreement about living conditions," Weber said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Shana Fulton argued that there was probable cause "at this time for the death of Leon Young," because Young's "at least 26 wounds" negate any argument of self-defense for Neal.

Fulton also argued that the many inconsistencies in Neal's story bolster the case for probable cause.

"The government doesn't believe that Leon Young killed Delano Wingfield," Fulton said, and it is "another inconsistency" in Neal's story.

Defense attorney Katerina Semyonova argued that Neal had reason to fear Young, given that Young previously attacked him. Semyonova also cited numerous instances of the "body's instinct to take over and just keep acting," such as individuals who shoot their attacker more than one time, and argued that Neal continued to strike because of his fear.

Judge Johnson disagreed with Semyonova, saying that "hitting someone over the head with a blunt object is different" and noting that Young was hit directly in the face.

A felony status conference in the case is scheduled for December 12 at 10:30 a.m. before Judge Johnson.
Megan ArellanoFri, 05 Sep 2014 22:22:50 -0400http://homicidewatch.org/2014/09/05/jeffrey-neal-held-for-leon-youngs-death-young-hit-with-hammer-28-times/Delano WingfieldLeon YoungSecond Man Found Dead at Shaw Residencehttp://homicidewatch.org/2014/06/17/second-man-found-dead-at-shaw-residence/
Metropolitan police found an unidentified man dead in the backyard area of the 1800 block of 8th Street Northwest, according to a press release. But he also said he intended to drive to Mexico after killing Young with a hammer and stealing his car.

That's according to documents charging Jeffrey Neal, 21, on suspicion of second-degree murder in the case. Neal was presented with the charge Saturday and will remain held until a preliminary hearing in the case scheduled for July 8.

Young, 22, was found dead at about 11:30 a.m. on June 12 in 1800 block of 8th Street Northwest. Charging documents say that medical examiners estimated that Young's head was hit more than 20 times with a weapon that could have had a "round blunt head."

Neal told police that on June 7, he saw his roommate and "long-time friend" Young standing naked in his bedroom, shaking and holding a "Kunai" knife, documents say.

When Neal asked Young what was wrong, Young "eventually" told him "he had killed Delano." Documents say that Neal said that he reached for a phone to call a friend because he was "puzzled and concerned" by the statement.

According to Neal, Young then turned to him and swung the knife at him, cutting his hand. Then, Neal said that he jumped back and grabbed a hammer that was on the table, documents say. After Young "lunged" at him again, Neal said he moved out of the way and hit Young in the head with the hammer, documents say.

Charging documents state that detectives later observed a minor scratch on Young's left index finger and "what appeared to be a minor cut" on his left thumb.

When Young lunged at him a third time, according to Neal, Neal struck him with the hammer again and felt the hammer "penetrate" Young's head. Young fell to the floor and Neal dropped the hammer in Young's room, Neal told police.

After Young fell, Neal said that he "began to panic," and carried Young's body to the attic. Neal told police that in the attic, he placed a plastic bag over Young's head to contain the bleeding. Then Neal said that he tried to clean the blood on the scene, was unable to effectively do so, and instead, took Young's cell phone, car keys, debit card, and clothing.

Neal told police that he intended to drive Young's car to Mexico, but ran out of money in Florida. Documents say that Neal said he bought a bus ticket home after his mother wired him funds.

On June 12, five days later, police found Young's body after two witnesses went to the house to make repairs and "investigate a foul odor." Young was found in the attic and several hammers, one with suspected blood, were recovered from the house, documents say.
Megan ArellanoMon, 16 Jun 2014 15:49:32 -0400http://homicidewatch.org/2014/06/16/murder-suspect-tells-police-that-victim-confessed-to-murder/Leon YoungThursday Shaw Beating Death Closed with Arresthttp://homicidewatch.org/2014/06/14/thursday-shaw-beating-death-closed-with-arrest/

The death of a 22-year-old DC man found beaten in Shaw mid-day Thursday has been ruled a homicide and an arrest has been made in the case, MPD reported Saturday afternoon.

Police said Leon Young, of Northwest DC, was found dead at about 11:30 a.m. An autopsy Friday determined that he died of blunt force trauma.

Friday night police arrested Jeffery Bernard Neal, 21, of Northwest DC, on suspicion of second-degree murder.

A press release from MPD is after the jump.

June 14, 2014
Undetermined Death Ruled a Homicide and Arrest Made: 1800 Block of 8th Street, NW

(Washington, DC)- Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced that an arrest has been made in the homicide that occurred in the 1800 block of 8th Street, Northwest.

On Thursday, June 12, 2014, at approximately 11:34 am, an adult male was found deceased in the 1800 block of 8th Street, Northwest.
