Reading Homicide Watch D.C.’s Year In Review Database

A few hints on getting the most out of Homicide Watch D.C.’s database of homicides in the District in 2010.

1. You can SORT columns by clicking the BLUE ARROW that appears when you mouse over the very top of a column (the letter field).

2. On SHEET 1, rows highlighted in BLUE are homicides that have not been prosecuted, i.e. UNSOLVED. HWDC made every attempt to locate publicly available information on arrests in every case, but we fully admit that there may be holes. If you know of an arrest in a case, submit that information in comments or in an email to homicidewatchdc [at] gmail.com

3. On SHEET 1, blocks highlighted in YELLOW are court cases that HWDC could not find in court records or that involve juveniles, whose court records were not accesible.

4. On SHEET 2, rows highlighted in BLUE-GREEN are homicides reported by OCTO that HWDC could not located in Metro Police’s public releases or in press reports. Please help us identify the victims (and any suspects) in these cases.

5. On SHEET 2, the row highlighted in PINK is the death of Ali Ahmed Mohammed. HWDC has not included the incident on SHEET 1, pending an announcement from Metro Police or the U.S. Attorney’s Office stating that Mohammed’s death meets the criminal criteria for murder.

6. Remember, all suspects/defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
