In brief:

A baby girl found abandoned on a Northeast DC doorstep early Monday morning died and police are investigating the circumstances of her death. MPD Chief Cathy Lanier appealed to the public for help identifying the baby’s parents.

A man beaten in Columbia Heights last Saturday died of his injuries and police classified the death a homicide this week. The man was identified as Juan Antonio Paredes. Jeffrey Mills was arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to kill in connection with the case, MPD said further charges were forthcoming.

John Smith pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed in the stabbing death of Elaine Coleman. Smith, 46, could be sentenced to a maximum of 40 years in prison, said Judge Robert Morin, who heard the case.

Christopher Reginald Williams, a 20-year-old Landover, Md. man, was arrested on suspicion of first degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Kevin Blackwell Jr.

Seventeen-year-old Derek Johnson was sentenced today to 14 years in prison for fatally stabbing former classmate Jamar Freeman near a Petworth playground in October.

Vasile Graure was convicted of felony murder in connection with a 2007 fire in Northwest DC that ultimately killed Vladimir Djordjevic.

Antonio Eugene Williams died on Nov. 8, 2011, after an alleged assault on Oct. 27. This week, MPD said his case has officially been ruled a homicide by the Baltimore Medical Examiner’s Office.
