Leads, but no ID, in Case of Abandoned Baby Girl

MPD recently released this photo of a towel the infant was found wrapped in.

The Metropolitan Police Department has received tips regarding a baby girl found abandoned on Jan. 15, but still has not identified the girl, Lt. Robert Alder said Friday.

She was found on a doorstep the night of Jan. 15 and died shortly after. The night she was found was freezing cold. She is a black infant, believed to be approximately one month old.

MPD is conducting a full investigation surrounding her death and will determine if criminal conduct has taken place once the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner releases its report on the cause of death, Alder said.

On Wednesday, MPD released a photo of the towel the infant was wrapped in when she was found unconscious in the 3000 block of Channing Street NE at 11:34 p.m. The towel has multi-colored stripes.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported the infant, whose exact age is still undetermined, to Children’s National Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:21 a.m. Jan. 16.

MPD encourages anyone with information about the case to call 202-727-9099 or anonymously send a text message tip to 50411.
