Orlando Carter Sentenced for Jail House Robbery

Orlando Carter, one of the five men convicted of taking part in the deadly South Capitol Street shootings was sentenced today to five and half years in prison for a robbery he committed while in custody at DC Jail.

The sentence is likely to be served concurrently to any sentence he receives in the South Capitol murder case.

Carter was indicted in Oct. 2011 on charges that in June of that year he took part in the robbery of another inmate at DC Jail. In the robbery the inmate was stabbed in the head and neck and personal belongings and food were taken from him. Carter was in custody on suspicion of five counts of first degree murder, among other crimes, at the time.

He pleaded guilty to one count of felony robbery in May, just days after being found guilty in the South Capitol Street shootings. Sentencing in that case is scheduled for Septmber. According to mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines, the minimum sentence he will receive in that case is 150 years.
