Each Friday, Homicide Watch brings you a list of upcoming hearings in the cases we follow. All hearings are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. unless otherwise noted. To add an item to the listing, email homicidewatchdc [at] gmail.com. To see scheduled court hearings beyond next week, see our calendar.

Eric Jerome Payne and Terrance McNeal are scheduled for a status hearing on Tuesday before Judge Robert Morin. Payne is charged with first-degree murder while armed and McNeal with second-degree murder while armed in the June stabbing death of Charles Hicks.

On Wednesday, Arvel Wills is expected for a preliminary hearing before Judge Ronna Beck. Wills is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his cousin, Dewayne Wills.

Sean Gerell Carter is expected for a preliminary hearing on Thursday before Judge Morin. Carter is charged with first-degree murder while armed in the Aug. 23 shooting death of Bidley Warren.

Raymond Roseboro Faces Unusual Third Murder Trial in 2010 Prince Okorie Killing

Dressed in a light blue button-down shirt, a blue and white stripped tie, and dark gray slacks, Raymond Roseboro took the stand in March to testify on his own behalf. Charged with murder and facing a minimum 30 years in prison, the 21-year-old tried to convince jurors that he was innocent.

In part, he succeeded. After four days of deliberations jurors told Judge Russell Canan that they were deadlocked; eight jurors were in favor of finding Roseboro guilty and four were against it.

In September prosecutors retried the case, but again the jury deadlocked. Read more

In Trial, Tearful Bassil Says She Didn’t Mean to Stab Harris

A tearful Dominique Bassil took the stand in her own defense today, as both the prosecution and defense concluded their cases in the death of Bassil’s boyfriend, Vance Harris II.

Did you love Vance?” defense attorney Madalyn Harvey asked Bassil.

Yes,” Bassil replied.

Did you want to stab him?”

No. I was scared.”

Malik Shabazz Pleads Guilty to Beating Demetrius Dempsey with Brick

Malik Shabazz, whose former name was Maurice Lee Yancey, pleaded guilty Thursday to a 2007 assault on Demetrius Dempsey.

Dempsey died December 13, 2010, more than three years after being beaten in the face with a landscaping brick. His death was ruled a homicide in January 2011.

Shabazz was arrested in March 2011 on suspicion of second-degree murder while armed.

Anthony Weathers, 25, Killed in 4th and V NE Shooting

A 25-year-old man died near the 2000 block of 4th Street Northeast last night after being shot in a nearby alley. Police identified him as Anthony Weathers of Suitland, Maryland.

Weathers was seen running across 4th Street and collapsing. Police say he “had been in the rear alley of the 300 block of V Street, NE, when he was shot multiple times by an unknown person. The victim then ran through the alley, ran across 4th Street, and collapsed in the 2000 block of 4th Street, NE, where he was located.” Read more

Antonio Fortson, Lamonte Henson, Marcellus McCray and Timothy Parker Sentenced In Gang-Related Killings

Antonio Fortson, Lamonte Henson, Marcellus McCray and Timothy Parker were sentenced last week to prison terms ranging from three to 19 years after being convicted in July for their involvement in multiple gang-related shootings, which took the lives of Melvin White and Antwan Buckner.

According to the government’s evidence, on April 10, 2010, Kurtis Faison shot and killed White, whom Faison believed was assisting a rival gang. Read more

Robert Carter Pleads Guilty in Killing of Angel Morse

Robert Carter pled guilty today to killing his 13-year-old daughter Angel Morse. His trial for first-degree murder was set to begin next week.

At a hearing in July 2011 Carter pleaded innocent. His attorney, Steven Kiersh, had filed notice that he would be using an insanity defense at trial.

Carter told mental health experts evaluating him in February that “there was something evil in the house” the day Morse was killed.

DC Superior Court to Reopen

After being closed Monday and only partially open Tuesday, DC Superior Court is scheduled to reopen Wednesday, according to a notice to journalists from courthouse spokeswoman Leah Gurowitz.

According to a notice posted on the courts’ website, criminal cases that were scheduled for Monday are expected to be heard Wednesday at 10 a.m. Criminal cases that were scheduled for Tuesday will be heard Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Jurors who were assigned to cases before the storm (sitting jurors) are expected to report to their assignments at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Details for other jurors are here.

DC Superior Court to Remain Closed Tuesday as Hurricane Sandy Hits

The DC Superior Court will stay closed on Tuesday.

The court planned to suspend all services Monday except for arraignments, but the entire courthouse was closed instead in the face of incoming Hurricane Sandy.

The storm was predicted to make landfall Monday evening.

The ongoing weather-related closure will bump back cases that were scheduled to be heard this week.

Online filing services continue to be available, and an emergency judge is on-call, according to the court’s website.

Police ID Victim of Saturday Shooting as Stevann Moorer

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place Saturday night in the 500 block of Parkland Place Southeast.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Stevann Moorer of Southeast D.C., according to MPD.
