Authorities eventually downgraded the charges against the five, then dropped them all together—albeit with the knowledge that they could re-file after autopsy results came in. But even the much-anticipated medical examiner’s ruling deepened the mystery. While the manner was declared “homicide,” the cause of death was ruled “excited delirium associated with arrhythmogenic cardiac anomalies, alcohol intoxication and physical exertion with restraint,” which would seem to corroborate the non-savage version of events.
Prosecutors are still investigating. No new charges have been filed.
In the meantime, lawyers, cops, activists, and reporters are poring over every detail of what did or didn’t happen that terrible night. But in the fervor over the unsolved mystery, the city has learned very little about one key piece of the story: The man who wound up dead.

The man accused of killing 17-year-old Ricardo Vondell Minger is being held without bail after a preliminary hearing on Feb. 1. A group of Kevin Lamont Clark’s family members looked on as Judge Russell Canan determined probable cause to hold Clark for first premeditated degree murder while armed Tuesday morning in a D.C. courtroom.

No Easy Answers at Florida and North Capitol
The story of Bill Mitchell’s death on Jan. 19 has been as much about the Truxton Cirle neighborhood as the crime itself. Mitchell was shot while intervening in a dispute between a man and woman on the street, according to reports. Residents have said they were shocked, but not entirely surprised.

The corner of Fl and N. Cap have been a problem as long as I’ve lived here (10 years) if not longer. There are several bus stops and a liquor store on that corner and there have been several failed attempts by BACA (Bates Area Civic Assoc) and other organizations to close up the liquor store and address that corner.
Part of the problem is the concentration of social services in the area.
