A scholarship fund in memory of Jamal Coates has raised $1,500, enough to send seven children to school in a Guatamala education program Coates was a part of before his death.
Coates, 21, was killed Sep. 28 in a shooting during a funeral procession for his friend Ashley McRae. Coates’ family asked that community contribute to the scholarship fund for Guatemalan students instead of helping to pay funeral expenses. Read more
A shooting just before 7:30 this evening in Northeast D.C. killed one man, according to Metro Police emergency radio traffic and a Washington Post report.

A D.C. Superior Court Judge found probable cause Tuesday in the cases against two Hyattsville men charged with the shooting death of Keith Banks.
Banks, a 29-year-old resident of Northwest D.C., was shot on the edge of Fort Circle Park at about 3 a.m. on Nov. 12. Investigators believe he was driven to the park, ordered out of the vehicle he had ridden in, chased down and shot. He was found unresponsive and died that morning at a local hospital, according to police reports.
In a preliminary hearing Tuesday, Metro Police Homicide Detective Gus Giannakoulias told the court that police believe two men are responsible for the shooting: Reginald Vance, a 39-year-old barber from Hyattsville, Md. and Derrell Bennett, a 22-year-old Hyattsville man. Both are charged with first-degree murder. Read more
One hundred and thirty one names are on Metro PD’s list of people who were killed in D.C. in 2010. Ja-Kai Wilson, just four months old at the time of death, was the city’s youngest homicide victim; Irvan Jackson, a 68-year-old Oxen Hill, Md man, was the city’s oldest.
Homicide Watch has pulled information on the cases from Metro Police press releases and reward posters, city records from the Office of the Chief Technology Officer, press reports and queries to D.C. Metro Police Spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump. The result is a spreadsheet that is not complete, but that we are satisfied gives a more complete view of how murder cases were prosecuted in 2010 as well as who died, when and where.
More on this in the morning, but Metro Police Spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump e-mailed over a list of D.C.’s homicide victims and information on the remaining nine cases Homicide Watch was still having trouble finding information about.
First the names Homicide Watch was not able to track down. According to Crump, those victims are: Ja-Kai Wilson, Herbert Johnson, Kourtnie Mitchell, Patricia Ann Martin, Bernard Lewis, Gregory Daniels, Vladimir Djordjevic and Dominic Simmons.
Crump also responded that a homicide listed in the homicide database did not exist.
