Kenneth Guytrell Sweet Killed in Early Morning SE DC Shooting

A 30-year-old Northeast DC man was fatally shot early Saturday morning in Southeast DC.

The man, identified by police as Kenneth Guytrell Sweet, was found unconscious by officers at about 3:46 a.m. They were responding to a report of a shooting. Sweet was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Muquan Cawthorne Pleads Guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter for Olijawon Griffin Death

Muquan Cawthorne pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed, armed robbery and a related weapons offense Friday in connection with the stabbing death of 18-year-old Olijawon Emmanuel Griffin. Prosecutors dropped initial charges of felony murder, conspiracy and assault.

Police found Griffin on November 17, 2012 around 1:20 am inside the Woodley Park Metro Station suffering from an apparent stab wound; a second male victim was also found beaten at the crime scene. Griffin was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Joshua Mebane Indicted in Murder of Quadar Muhammad

Joshua Mebane, one of two teens suspected in the shooting death of a D.C. taxi driver, was arraigned Friday on two counts of murder in connection with the shooting death of 44-year-old Quadar Muhammad. Mebane pleaded innocent to all charges and remains held pending a status hearing October 31.

On November 7, 2012, at around 9:00 p.m. police found Muhammad dead inside a burning Lincoln taxi cab on the 1400 block of Brentwood Parkway Northeast. The following day an autopsy showed that Muhammad suffered from a single gunshot wound to the head; the death was ruled a homicide.

Judge in “21st and Vietnam” Murder Trial Denies Motion for Mistrial, After Releasing Another Juror

A jury that has been deliberating for more than two weeks in a DC murder case was excused Thursday morning after the judge in the case decided to remove one juror from the group.

It is the third time a juror has been dismissed from service in the case, which began June 25.

The case alleges that Anthony Hatton, Jekwan Smith, Johnnie Harris, and Stanley Moghalu are members of a crew called “21st and Vietnam,” which is alleged to be responsible for the deaths of Tyrell Fogle, Isaiah Sheffield and Steven Moore.

Police: Timothy Dawkins May Not Have Been Target in Shootout that Left Him Dead

A shootout at a Southeast DC apartment complex that killed community activist Timothy Delonte Dawkins may have had another target.

At a preliminary hearing Thursday, MPD Detective Michael Murphy testified that video captured by a surveillance camera at the apartment complex showed two men exchanging gunfire and Dawkins falling to the ground.

They seemed to be shooting at each other,” Murphy said. “I don’t know if the decedent was the intended target.”

SW DC Double Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Injured


UPDATE: MPD has identified the man killed in this shooting as 28-year-old Donald Ray Brown of Northeast DC. The surviving victim, MPD said, is a juvenile female.

A double shooting in Southwest DC Wednesday killed one man. A second was shot in the hand.

The Washington Post reports that the shooting occurred in a courtyard area of the Greenleaf Gardens apartments.

Carlos Parks Held in Connection with Tywayne Thompson Murder

Judge Karen Howze ruled that there was enough evidence Wednesday to hold Carlos Parks in connection with the the June shooting death of 25-year-old Tywayne Thompson.

Parks, 17, is the second suspect to be held in connection with the case. Troy Quentin Robinson was arrested in connection with Thompson’s death in August. A preliminary hearing for Parks and Robinson has been scheduled for September 13.

On June 24, around 1:25 a.m., Thompson was found by police in the 700 block of 12th Street Southeast suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Thompson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Rock Creek Park Stabbing Victim Identified as Matias Molina, 49

A man found dead in Rock Creek Park Monday evening has been identified as 49-year-old Matias Molina of Northwest DC, WUSA and WJLA report.

Molina appeared to have been stabbed. His body was found by a resident near the intersection of Beach Drive and Joyce Road.

At a press conference Tuesday, acting Captain Robert Alder said the investigation is seeking to determine whether the stabbing actually occurred at the Rock Creek Park. Based on Molina’s attire, Alder told reporters that it didn’t appear that he had been exercising in the park.

25 Year Prison Sentence in Clay Terrace Shooting that Killed Teen Bystander

A 21-year-old DC man who pleaded guilty in May to participating in a 2009 shooting that killed a 15-year-old bystander was sentenced today to 25 years in prison.

Antonio Barnes was one of three young men who accepted responsibility for Davonta Artis’s death by pleading guilty to manslaughter. Co-defendants Earl Jackson, 20, is expected to be sentenced in September and Sequarn Tibbs, 22, in November.
