Sean Hawkins, 37, was ordered held Friday pending a preliminary hearing in connection with the August 2011 shooting death of Antwain Henderson.
Hawkins was arrested Thursday on the charge of second-degree murder. Hawkins was in custody serving a sentence at the Maryland Correctional Institute - Jessup
According to charging documents in the case, Hawkins provided information, which is mentioned in charging documents, about his involvement in the homicide to police in September. He said that he was present when a co-defendant, identified only as Ozzie,” shot Henderson outside Ozzie’s mother’s house in Northeast DC.
According to the charging documents, Hawkins also told police that after the shooting he helped “Ozzie” move Henderson indoors. Hawkins said that when Henderson stopped breathing he helped cleaned him up and put him in the trunk of Henderson’s car.
When Hawkins and “Ozzie” could not find Henderson’s car keys, “Ozzie” called someone with a tow truck and had the car, with Henderson in the trunk, towed to Maryland. Members of Prince George’s County Fire Department found the burning car and body later that day in Capitol Heights Md, according to charging documents.
The person with the tow-truck is a co-defendant in the case, according to the charging documents, but is not named.
In his statement to the police, Hawkins said he was not present for the burning, but had known that it was his co-defendants’ intent to burn the vehicle with Henderson’s body in it.
A preliminary hearing is set for the case on July 6.
Hawkin’s attorney told Judge Karen Howze on Friday that Hawkins is currently serving a sentence in Maryland and would wish to remain incarcerated in Maryland instead of moving to D.C. Jail. Howze declined to rule on where Hawkins should be held, suggesting that the judge adjudicating the case should make that decision.
