Dietrich Baker Arraigned on First-Degree Murder Charge

Dietrich Baker, already in custody for the 2012 shooting death of James Ray Sherrod, was arraigned in D.C. Superior Court Thursday on a new five-count grand jury indictment.

The grand jury charged Baker with first-degree murder while armed, along with four weapons charges. He pleaded innocent.

Baker had originally faced second-degree murder charges in Sherrod’s murder near a Kenilworth Avenue bus stop. He’s been in custody since April 30, 2012.

Burnis Cole Arrested in Raasheem Jamal Rich Murder

Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force officers have arrested Burnis Cole Thursday in connection with the Jan. 10 murder of Raasheem Jamal Rich.

Rich, 40, was the District’s first homicide of 2013. Police distributed a video showing a person of interest in the case Saturday.

As of Thursday afternoon, Cole had not yet appeared before a judge to be presented with first-degree murder charges.

Jury Selected in John Bolton Murder Trial

Jurors selected Wednesday are expected to hear opening arguments Thursday morning in the murder case against John Bolton, accused of killing Christopher Fletcher at a cookout in 2011.

Bolton faces a charge of first degree murder and three weapons charges in the case.

One Year Later, MPD Continuing to Investigate Unidentified Infant

Towel abandoned infant was found wrapped WithIt’s been a year since police officers found an abandoned infant in the 3000 block of Channing Street Northeast, but detectives have yet to locate a suspect in what was ruled homicide by hypothermia when the child died.

On Wednesday, the one year anniversary of the child’s death, MPD issued a news release again seeking the public’s help in the case. A photo of the towel the child was wrapped in has been released in hopes that it may lead to information about the baby.

Fundraiser Held for Metrobus Shooting Victim’s Medical Bills

A popular local Go-Go group held a benefit concert Tuesday to raise money in support of Selina Brown‘s young child, Kodie, who was shot along with her mother in Dec. 2012, WJLA reports.

Brown was killed in that attack and Kodie survived. Brown’s boyfriend, also Kodie’s father, was suspected in the shooting. He later committed suicide in Hempstead, N.Y.

Jury Deliberations Begin in Ellsworth Colbert Murder Trial

After six days of testimony, jurors were sent to deliberate Wednesday in the case against Ellsworth Colbert, who is charged with fatally stabbing his neighbor, Robert Leroy Wright, on March 4, 2012.

Colbert’s defense attorney has argued that Colbert acted in self-defense, but prosecutors have argued that Colbert was the aggressor in the attack.

Colbert is charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill and three weapons charges.

Sean Carter Pleads Guilty to August Murder of Biddley Warren

Sean Carter pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of second-degree murder, telling Judge Robert Morin that he killed Biddley Warren in August.

U.S. Marshals arrested Carter, 22, in Atlanta in October. He was later extradited to the District of Columbia. Prosecutors said he confessed his involvement to police investigators while in custody.

Monday Shooting Victim Identified as Dominic Davis

WTOP reports this morning that a man killed Monday in Northeast DC has been identified as 27-year-old Dominic Davis.

Says WTOP:

D.C. police say a 27-year-old man was shot and killed in Northeast Washington.

Dominic Davis of Washington was found Monday morning suffering from gunshot wounds on 57th Street, Northeast. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Davis’ death is the second homicide of 2013.

Man Killed in Mid-Morning Shooting Monday

A shooting in Northeast DC mid-morning Monday killed a man, WJLA and WUSA report.

Reports WJLA:

MPD officials say that the victim was shot several times in the 500 block of 57th Street NE at about 10:30 a.m.

MPD Commander George Kucik said, “The investigation’s very, very early, so we’re really in the process of interviewing witnesses and trying to determine exactly what happened. The only thing we have is information from someone that saw a small, black vehicle leaving the scene.”

Witness: Wright and Colbert were “like two boxers meeting in the center of a ring”

In a 911 call played Monday at court, jurors in Ellsworth Colbert‘s murder trial heard a firsthand account of the altercation that led to Robert Wright‘s death last year.

Colbert, 57, is suspected of stabbing and killing Wright on March 4, 2012, after a dispute involving a pit bull named Macho.

A witness who placed the 911 call testified Monday that he initially felt the altercation between Colbert and Wright was amusing because of the age disparity between the two men. After the witness saw Wright fall face down on the pavement, though, the situation quickly turned serious.
