Week in Review

In brief:

Nine days into the new year, DC recorded the year’s first homicide; the victim: Raasheem Jamal Rich. Police said Rich was fatally stabbed Thursday afternoon in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue Southeast, near the Good Hope Marketplace.

Ellsworth Colbert‘s trial began at DC Superior Court. Opening arguments were heard Tuesday and the prosecution presented its case through the end of the week. Colbert is charged with killing his neighbor, Robert Wright. Prosecutors told jurors the crime was a neighborhood dispute over a dog which turned deadly violent. But Colbert’s defense attorney disagreed, arguing to jurors that the man on trial was not the agressor, that he was fighting for his life when he stabbed neighbor Wright.

Khari Williams was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Angelo Payne. Payne was killed Dec. 30.

A 21-count indictment charging a DC street gang with murder, conspiracy, and other crimes, was been amended to include a sixth suspect: 20-year-old Delrico Shuford. Shuford was arrested Wednesday. He pleaded innocent at his arraignment Thursday on charges including the 2011 shooting death of Tyrell Fogle.

Reco Pernell Coates III was sentenced to eight years in prison today for the 2007 murder of 39-year-old Anthony Collins. Coates pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the case in November.

Ariston Jamal Dickson pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Friday morning in the shooting death of Robert Maurice Lesuer.

Video Shows Persons of Interest in Death of Raasheem Jamal Rich

Police have released a video showing two men they believe were involved in the fatal stabbing of Raasheem Jamal Rich.

Rich died Thursday afternoon in the year’s first homicide. He was found suffering from stab wounds in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue Southeast and died after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Ariston Jamal Dickson Pleads Guilty to Murder of Robert Lesueur

Ariston Jamal Dickson pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Friday morning in the shooting death of Robert Maurice Lesuer. He also pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Dickson is scheduled to be sentenced June 7. Read more

First Homicide Victim of 2013 Identified as Raasheem Jamal Rich

MPD has identified a man fatally stabbed Thursday afternoon in Southeast DC as 40-year-old Raasheem Jamal Rich of Northeast, Washington, DC.

Rich was found suffering from stab wounds in the 2800 block of Alabama Ave. SE at about 3:30 p.m.

DC police said Thursday that they were looking for two black men about 25 to 30 years old, wearing skullcaps, grey jackets, tan pants, and reflective vests.

Delrico Shuford Pleads Innocent to Murder of Tyrell Fogle

A 21-count indictment charging a DC street gang with murder, conspiracy, and other crimes, has been amended to include a sixth suspect: 20-year-old Delrico Shuford.

Shuford was added to the indictment Wednesday, charged with conspiracy and first-degree murder in connection with the 2011 shooting death of Tyrell Fogle. Shuford pleaded innocent at his arraignment before Judge Herbert Dixon Thursday.

Reco Coates Sentenced to Eight Years for 2007 Slaying of Anthony Collins

Reco Pernell Coates III was sentenced to eight years in prison today for the 2007 murder of 39-year-old Anthony Collins. Coates pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the case in November. The eight year sentence was agreed upon by both attorneys and approved by Judge William Jackson Friday.

According to plea documents in the case, on November 12, 2007, Coates, along with accomplices, knocked on Collins’ front door, pretending to want drugs.

“This was a gang of robbers teamed up to steal drugs from Mr. Collins,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Shana Fulton.

Man Stabbed to Death in Year’s First Homicide

In the District’s first homicide of 2013, a man was fatally stabbed Thursday afternoon in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue Southeast, near the Good Hope Marketplace.

Friends of the man said his name was Jamal Rich.

Delrico Shuford Arrested in Death of Tyrell Fogle

A second suspect was arrested Wednesday in connection with the August 2011 shooting death of DC teen Tyrell Fogle, MPD said Wednesday night.

The suspect, 20-year-old Delrico Shuford, is suspected of first-degree murder while armed and conspiracy, police said.

Another suspect, Anthony Hatton, was indicted in connection with Fogle’s death in May. He is due to be arraigned on a superseding indictment on Jan. 18.
