According to court documents released Tuesday, Sean Gerell Carter told detectives that he shot at Bidley Warren on the night of Aug. 23, but Carter claimed that he only intended to scare Warren and didn’t mean to kill him.
Carter, 22, was arrested near Atlanta, Ga., on Oct. 3, and brought to Washington, D.C., on Monday. He appeared in court for the first time Tuesday afternoon to be presented with first-degree murder charges.
Judge Karen Houze ruled that Carter was both a flight risk and a threat to the community, and ordered him detained, in part based on a prior gun-related conviction.
Charging documents say Warren and another man were walking in the 1000 block of Rhode Island Avenue Northeast about 10:15 p.m. on Aug. 23, when Carter began chasing them and shooting at them, according to the documents. Carter told police that Warren and the other man got off the P6 bus on Rhode Island Avenue and began taunting him. He said he returned to his house, retrieved a .9 Beretta gun from under his mattress, and shot at Warren, whom he called “Bills,” and “the kid.” Warren was pronounced dead at the scene.
