Culpeper Men Indicted in Death of Glen Scarborough

An 18-count indictment against three Culpeper, Va. men was returned this week, charging them with the choking death of Glenn Scarborough in his Trinidad home in June.

Theodore Spencer, Terrell Wilson and Phillip Swan are due in court Jan. 11 to be arraigned on the charges.

The indictment alleges that the men conspired to attack and assault Scarborough for mistreating Spencer’s mother, Sharon Spencer, who was gravely ill. The men also believed that Scarborough had failed to take proper care of Sharon Spencer during her illness.

Guest Column: Jim Graham

Dear Friends, This holiday season, my prayers are with families and friends who have lost loved ones due to violence in our city.

Day after day Homicide Watch offers a window into a family’s pain and grief. It also provides all of us a glimpse into the legal and judicial process related to each incident. Laura Amico’s reporting is sensitive, compassionate and always timely.

Over the last several years, we have seen great community partnerships developed by MPD and community groups to reduce violence—these efforts help save lives.

Still, all of us would agree too many young people continue to die violent deaths—and often at the hands of other young people. As of this week, 44 of the 106 homicide victims are younger than 25 years old.

Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans

In this guest column, Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans discusses how he sees Ward 2 moving forward after the death of Jhonte Coleman outside a Dupont Circle restaurant-turned-nightclub this year.

To much of the city and even my colleagues on the Council, I think Ward 2 appears to be an idyllic place free of any major public safety problems.  While it is true that Ward 2 contains the commercial center of the city and also benefits from the economic activity of our many wonderful shops, restaurants, and taverns, the presence of bustling evening and late night foot traffic necessarily results in unfortunate periodic acts of violence.  Two issues of particular concern to me are the incidences of hate crimes in our neighborhoods and acts of violence associated with “promoters,” at various ABC establishments.

Hopelessness Breeds Homicide – But the District Is Heading in the Right Direction

As of mid-December, there have been 106 homicides in the District of Columbia in 2011 — 16 percent below that number at same date last year – and that statistic is on pace to be the lowest annual homicide total in the District in nearly 50 years. This represents both the continuation and acceleration of a trend we’ve seen over the last decade. It’s also taking place at the same time that the District’s population is growing, meaning the murder rate is decreasing even more rapidly than the overall number of homicides.

We Remember: A Letter from Homicide Watch DC

This past February, 18-year-old Cardozo High senior Lucki Pannell left this message on her Facebook wall:

Less than two hours later, Pannell was dead. Detectives said a man walked up to Pannell’s Columbia Heights porch, aimed a gun at Pannell and her friends, and fired.

She was ultimately one of 108 people killed this year in DC, the majority of them lost to gun violence.

Many cases, like Pannell’s, remain open without arrests. Others have been closed quickly. In DC courts, 70 people have been charged with murder or are awaiting murder charges in crimes committed in 2011.

Comment of the Day: “His kids and our son all have to suffer”

This Comment of the Day comes from MissingMyJR, who wrote about Kevin Washington:

Iam the Babymother of Kevin washington & our son who will be 1 next week has to grow up without his knowing his father at all. Our son was only 3 months old when kevin got killed didn’t even get to really do any bonding with with him… Everyday I wish that I was with him the night he got killed nagging him to stay in the house with us. I was reading about the other boys death who got killed in the same month (Chris) & I saw that he also was a father now his kids and our son all have to suffer because of some ignorant hood beef that could have easily been settlled! The problem with young men today is they can’t take a good old fashioned ass beaten. They can’t take a L so they gotta go do something so dumb as Taking anothers life! Kevin we love and miss you baby and may your heart and soul rest in peace<3
