Neighborhood “Feud” Killed Two in One Month, Detective Testifies at Jekwan Smith’s Preliminary Hearing

A fatal shooting in Northeast DC on Sept. 28 was part of an ongoing dispute between rivaling neighborhood men. A dispute that was part of another homicide, just one month prior.

That’s according to MPD Detective Dwayne Partman, who testified Wednesday at a preliminary hearing for Jekwan Smith.

Smith, 20, is suspected of being part of a group of young men that shot at Isaiah Sheffield as he rode his bike past them in the 1100 block of 21st Street NE.

MPD has identified a man shot by officers Monday night in Northeast DC as 20-year-old Michael Ezekel Epps of Windsor Mill, MD.

Man Dead After Police Shooting in NE DC

A man died Monday night after being shot by MPD officers, MPD said in a press release at 11 p.m.

MPD said the man was “firing a weapon” when police arrived at the 5300 block of Clay Terrace, NE.

Said MPD:

The officers ordered the suspect to drop his gun. However, the armed suspect did not comply. Therefore, the responding officers discharged their service weapons resulting in the suspect being struck. The intervening officers performed CPR on the suspect until personnel from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived. The suspect was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

A man killed in Northeast DC last week was identified as Steven Curtis Moore, 36.

Delvon Javis Shearin, 35, was fatally shot in Southeast DC Saturday morning.

Stephon Emmanuel Way, 24, was fatally shot in Northeast DC, also Saturday morning. A 16-year-old girl who was with him was wounded in the shooting.

David Warren, the brother of Montez Warren, is suspected of felony murder while armed in the shooting death of Ervin Lamont Griffin, court records showed.

James Speaks pleaded innocent to a charge of first-degree murder while armed in connection with the shooting death of Shonell Chris Corriea.

Jewell Washington was released from custody; she had been held since October on suspicion of killing her half-brother, Mark Goldring, during an argument at their father’s Northeast DC home. The case is pending a grand jury indictment.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says it won’t press charges in the death of Army veteran Patrick Casey who died after a fight outside a McDonald’s near Dupont Circle. Police are calling it a “justifiable homicide by citizen.”

Seven DC men were indicted with a series of gang, weapons, drugs, and violent crimes reported to have taken place in Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan and the U Street corridor since 2006. Among those crimes are three homicides, including that of Jamal Coates, who was killed while leaving a friend’s funeral in the U Street corridor last year. Councilman Jim Graham, said the indictment is a “huge breakthrough in breaking up one of the most violent gang wars in Ward One.” Two of the men named in the indictment— Keir Johnson and Marcellus Jackson — remained at large Friday; Judge Thomas Motley urged them to turn themselves in to authorities. He told a lawyer representing Jackson that the warrants are “not an invitation.”

Kwan Kearney was found guilty of first-degree murder while armed in the shooting death of Joseph Alonzo Sharps Jr. The trial began Monday. A verdict was reached by noon, Friday. Kearney was also found guilty on all other seven counts in the indictment, including assault with intent to kill.

Rashad Slye, who is suspected of first-degree murder in the October shooting of cab driver Domingo Ezirike, was ordered held after Judge Gerald Fisher found substantial probability that he is responsible for the man’s shooting death.

Benning Road Shooting Victim IDed as Stephon Emmanuel Way

A man shot and killed near the Benning Road metro station Saturday morning has been identified as Stephon Emmanuel Way, a 24-year-old from Upper Marlboro, Md.

According to media reports, the second victim in that shooting, a 16-year-old girl, has survived.

This will not bring back Joseph. But at least the killer will not be able to harm anyone else. What a tragedy. I hope the Sharps family can heal.

Two People Killed Overnight in NE and SE DC


MPD has said that two people are dead in homicides that occurred overnight, one on Benning Road, NE and one on Ainger Pl, SE.

A press conference is scheduled for 12:30 today, MPD said.

MPD is actively investigating 2 Homicides:

The first one occured in the 4500 Block of Benning Road, NE at approximately 4 am. The victim is an adult male. A juvenile female sustained a non-life threatening injury as well. More details to follow.

The second one occured in the 2300 block of Ainger Pl, SE at approximately 830 am. The victim is an adult male. More details to follow.

Death Investigation in Columbia Heights

MPD is investigating a death in Columbia Heights this morning, a listserv message from Third District Commander Jacob Kishter states.

It says:

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a death which occurred at 14th and Park Road at approximately 5:15 AM this morning.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099 or or text at 50411.

In an email to the Columbia Heights community, Councilman Jim Graham said that the victim, a 42-year-old man, appeared to have been dropped from a car.
