Second Arrest in May 2010 Homicide of Dawan Anthony Felder

Allen Verter Jr. was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with the fatal shooting of Dawan Anthony Felder in May 2010.

Darnell Hawkins was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder in the case in June. He pleaded innocent. A jury trial is scheduled for June 2012.

Additional Arrest in Homicide: 5000 Block of D Street, SE

(Washington, DC)- Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced that an arrest has been made in the homicide of 28-year-old Dawan Anthony Felder.

On Saturday, May 16, 2010, at approximately 2:20 am, units from the Sixth District were dispatched to the 5000 block of D Street, SE, to investigate the report of sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, they located the victim lying on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and found the victim unconscious, unresponsive, and with no vital signs consistent with life. Subsequently, the victim, identified as 28-year-old Dawan Anthony Felder of Clinton, Maryland, was pronounced dead by a member of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

James Fields, also known as Jamal Mungo, Held in Death of Christopher Freeman

James Fields was ordered held today pending a preliminary hearing in connection with the shooting death of Christopher Freeman in Southeast DC on August 5.

Freeman was one of two people shot in an ally in the 300 block of 34th Street Southeast at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 5. According to charging documents in the case, Freeman was shot multiple times in the head and body. He was found in the alley by MPD officers responding to a report of a shooting. The second victim showed up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds to the face, left shoulder and right hand. That victim survived and, in an interview with police, said that “Jim” was responsible for the shooting, charging documents allege.

Week Ahead

Each Friday, Homicide Watch brings you a tickler of upcoming hearings in the cases we follow. All hearings are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. unless otherwise noted. To add an item to the calendar, email homicidewatchdc [at] gmail.com.

On Monday a jury trial is expected to begin in the case against Samson Alemayhu. Alemayhu is charged with the stabbing death of Assefaw Hagos 1900 block of 9th Street, NW in May 2010. Judge Lynn Leibovitz has the case.

On Thursday Marc Tapp is expected by Judge Leibovitz for a preliminary hearing. Tapp is suspected of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jermaine Anderson at “Ivy City Day” in May.

On Friday, Musonda Mulenga is expected by Judge Thomas Motley for a preliminary hearing. He’s suspected in the February 2010 shooting death of Michaeldeon Talley.

Ronald Pickett is expected for a status hearing in front of Judge Gerald Fisher. Pickett, who is not in custody, is accused of killing his fiance, Vanessa McGee in their home in March. He’s suspected of manslaughter in the case.

Judge Fisher is also expecting Terrance McNeal, who is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in a second-degree murder case. He is suspected in the stabbing death of 53-year-old Charles Hicks in June.

Judge Leibovitz is expected to see William Faison for a preliminary hearing. Faison is suspected of felony murder in the shooting death of Jeffrey Covington on July 2.

MPD ID’s Woman Found Dead outside Old Post Office Pavilion Monday

A woman found dead of an apparent stabbing in downtown DC on Monday has been identified by authorities, an MPD spokeswoman said Friday.

The woman’s identity will be released pending notification of her next of kin, the spokeswoman said.

Prosecutors Given Time to Clarify Case Against Phillip Crooms

At a preliminary hearing today Judge Lynn Leibovitz sent government prosecutors back to the drawing board, instructing them to find clarification on the cause of death of 29-year-old Delonte Butler.

Butler’s body was found by District officers on Sept. 25, 2010 next to a car that was on fire.

Joseph Spinks was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with the case that same month. His case remains open and is pending indictment.

Phillip Crooms was arrested in May and was before Judge Leibovitz Friday when she instructed prosecutors to clarify Butler’s cause of death.

According to charging documents, prosecutors believe that Butler was shot inside of a vehicle by a man with a shotgun. Immediately following the shooting, the car collided with a tree. Crooms, suspected of felony murder, is not suspected of taking part in the shooting, but instead of handing Spinks a bottle of rubbing alcohol in order to light the car on fire and destroy evidence of the shooting, charging documents allege.

James Fields Arrested in Christopher Freeman Homicide

A 31-year-old homeless man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of Christopher Freeman in Southeast DC on Aug. 5.

James Fields is suspected of second-degree murder while armed in the case, MPD said in a press release.

Musonda Mulenga Arrested in Shooting Death of Michaeldeon Talley

A Hyattsville, MD man was arrested yesterday in connection with the February 2010 shooting death of Michaeldeon Talley.

Musonda Mulenga, 25, is suspected of First Degree Murder. He is scheduled to be presented with the charge today.

Mulenga is the second person arrested in the case. Twenty one-year-old Latonya Hall pleaded guilty to felony murder in the case. She’s due back in court Oct. 20.

Capitol Heights Man Dead After DC Stabbing



A 26-year old Capitol Heights man died yesterday following a stabbing early Tuesday morning.

The man, Dwight Gaiter, was found stabbed at approximately 12:15 am Tuesday in the 400 Block of 56th Street, NE. He died of his injuries early Wednesday evening, MPD said.

Terrance “Peanut” McNeal held in Fatal June Stabbing of Army Vet

A 31-Southeast DC man known as “Peanut” was presented today with a charge of second-degree murder while armed in connection with the stabbing death of 53-year-old Charles Hicks in June.

Terrance McNeil, whose name is court records is Terrance McNeal, told authorities that he saw Hicks the night he was killed.

According to charging documents in the case, McNeal told authorities that

he was outside the night [Hicks] was stabbed and reported the
following. That he was stan ing outside when he was approached by [Hicks]. [Hicks] inquired about purchasing drugs and Mr. McNeal relayed to [Hicks] that he does not sell drugs. [Hicks] walked away. About 15 minutes later, Mr. McNeal states he saw [Hicks] walking in the parking lot. Mr. McNeal stated he heard a voice yell words to the effect of “WHERE”S MY MONEY.” Mr. McNeal reported seeing two subjects wearing blue jeans, black shirts and ski masks over their faces. Mr. McNeal reported seeing the two subjects run to and begin to hit Mr. McNeal stated that he ran

Authorities heard different stories from witness, two of whom told police that McNeal told them he was involved in Hick’s death.

Domestic Disagreement May Have Led to Fatal NE DC Shooting Saturday, Charging Documents Hint

Lester Wright was formally presented with a charge of second-degree murder while armed yesterday for the shooting death of 48-year-old Howard Williams Saturday in Northeast D.C.

Wright is expected for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 26 in front of Judge Lynn Leibovitz.

According to charging documents, Williams, Wright, and Wright’s aunt all lived together in an apartment on 18th Place NE. An argument between Wright and the two others in the house preceded the shooting, a witness told police.
