Robert Carter Indicted on First Degree Murder for Death of Daughter Angel Morse

A Grand Jury today indicted Robert Carter for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his daughter, 13-year-old Angel Morse.

Carter was indicted on a total of 23 additional charges related to the killing, including wounding two others, holding six people against their will, and carjacking.

Charging documents allege that Carter shot Morse once through the head while the girl was in the basement of the family’s northwest DC home. Afterwards, witnesses, some of whom were held in the house by Carter, reported to police that Carter told them “he shot and killed Angel because she wouldn’t listen.”

A witness also reported to police that Carter said “Angel is in the basement… I didn’t mean to do it.”

Carter is due in court tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 9:30 in Judge Motley’s courtroom.

A press release from the US Attorney’s Office is after the jump, along with charging documents in the case and the indictment.

Judge William Jackson today prohibited D.C.’s public defender service from representing Terry Jimenez, one of three men accused in the shooting death of Robert Foster Jr. following the Caribbean Festival in Northwest D.C. last month.

PDS has represented one of Jimenez’ codefendants in the case, a rival gang member, for about five years and Jackson said there were no steps that could be taken to ensure that there wasn’t a conflict of interest, or appearance of any conflict.

Jackson said that based on the government’s evidence in the case, it’s likely that defense attorneys for Jimenez and Terrance Bush will “invariably point the finger at the other guy.”

James Brewer held on Murder Charge after Court Escape

It was James Brewer‘s second court appearance in four days, but the first one in which he gave his real name.

Shackled and flanked by US Marshals, Brewer appeared in DC Superior Court Monday afternoon to be presented with the felony murder charge authorities had anticipated presenting him with on Friday.

That plan was foiled when Brewer exchanged identification bracelets with another defendant and called out that man’s name when asked to identify himself. Brewer, posing as the other defendant, was released from custody, walked out of the courthouse and away from the felony murder charge.

It’s clear he was scared and frightened of being convicted of something he didn’t commit,” his defense attorney, Michael Satin, said Monday.
