Deon Thomas Ordered Held in Stabbing Death of John Thomas Tillman

Judge Karen Howze ordered Deon Thomas held Tuesday in connection with the stabbing death of 63-year-old John Thomas Tillman. Thomas, 37, remains held pending a preliminary hearing December 20.

On December 8, police found Tillman with a stab wound to his right neck at the intersection of North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue Northwest. Tillman was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m., 23 minutes later. An autopsy later concluded that Tillman suffered a severe laceration to his cartoid artery, causing significant blood loss.

Charging documents say on Dec. 8, Thomas was sent to a local hospital after emergency personnel responded to a report from a local homeless shelter that someone was “acting irrationally and bleeding from the hands”.

Judge Declares Mistrial on Remaining Charges Against Jekwan Smith and Johnnie Harris

Judge Henry Greene declared a mistrial Monday on the remaining charges against Jekwan Smith and Johnnie Harris in connection with the 2011 shooting death of 24-year-old Isaiah Sheffield.

It is the third time Greene has declared a mistrial on charges faced by Smith and Harris in the case. Monday’s decision ends all deliberations in the trial.

Jurors had been deliberating in the four co-defendant trial since August 20. Prosecutors argued that Smith, Harris, Stanley Moghalu and Anthony Hatton were members of a crew called “21st and Vietnam.” The co-defendants were charged with 21 counts including conspiracy, first-degree murder, obstruction of justice, assault, and weapons charges related to the deaths of Sheffield, Steven Moore and Tyrell Fogle.

At Trial, Witness Describes Surviving Caribbean Festival Shooting

They sounded like firecrackers. It was a bunch of shots, and everyone started running.”

Everyone, Trevis Johnson said, but his friend Robert Foster Jr.

Testifying at trial Monday, Johnson told jurors how he and Foster came to be on Gresham Place the afternoon of the Carribean Festival in June 2011 when three men exchanged gunfire, catching the friends in their crossfire while the two men drank beers about a block from the parade route.

Deonte Bryant and Terrance Bush are charged in the case and have stood trial at DC Superior Court since Nov. 25. They are suspected of participating in the shootout which killed Foster and injured Johnson and Alecia Harrison.

John Thomas Tillman, 63, Fatally Stabbed Near Truxton Circle; Suspect in Custody

A man found stabbed near Truxton Circle Sunday night has died of his injuries and a suspect has been arrested.

The victim, identified by police as 63-year-old John Thomas Tillman of Southeast DC, was found by police who were responding to a call for a man down near North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue, Northwest. Tillman was discovered to have been stabbed and was taken to a hospital where he died.

Cedric Spicer Pleads Guilty in Joseph Hardin Murder

Cedric Spicer pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder while armed in the February shooting death of 24-year-old Joseph Hardin.

Prosecutors have agreed to a plea agreement that will give Spicer 23 years in prison for Hardin’s death.

Police found Hardin February 23 around 1:15 a.m. on the 1900 block of 9th Street Northwest shot and dead. Spicer, 25, was seen blocks away throwing a silver and black .40 caliber handgun as he fled the scene. He was arrested and charged in Hardin’s death.

According to plea documents, the night of the murder, Hardin was with his girlfriend and other friends at the “1920 Lounge,” a night club in Northwest D.C. Read more

Sheridan Street Shooting Victim Identified as Demetrius Eccles

A man who died after being shot on Sheridan Street Northwest Saturday night has been identified by police as 31-year-old Demetrius Eccles of Northwest DC.

In brief:

Anthony Robinson, 26, of Southeast D.C. died Monday from multiple gunshot wounds in the 1900 block of 17th Street Southeast.

Darius Jamal Murphy, 19, of Northeast D.C. was fatally hit by police Tuesday in the 1300 block of Queen Street Northeast.

Lamont William Hall, 32, was found unconscious in the 200 block of Bates Street Northwest with an apparent gunshot wound just after midnight Saturday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man was found dead in the Brightwood neighborhood of Northwest DC Saturday night by police responding to a report of gunshots. The man’s identity has not been released.

Jurors found Michael Poth, the former Marine, guilty Monday of voluntary manslaughter while armed in connection with the April 2012 stabbing death of 23-year-old Philip Bushong, a fellow Marine.

Claire Rice, 65, pleaded innocent Monday to charges of first-degree premeditated murder while armed and related weapons offenses in connection with the Dec. 2012 shooting death of her 58-year-old cousin Anthony Garland Rice.

Judge Henry Greene declared a mistrial Monday on the remaining counts against 20-year-old Anthony Hatton, after the jury notified the court that they were deadlocked on the charges.

On Monday, mental health experts found 56-year-old Gary Montgomery incompetent to stand trial for the February 2012 stabbing death of 23-year-old Deoni Jones.

Charles Young, 22, was ordered held Friday in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Rokeida Spriggs.

Man Found Dead After Report of Gunshots in NW DC

A man was found dead in the Brightwood neighborhood of Northwest DC Saturday night by police responding to a report of gunshots, according to a message on the Fourth District Listserv.

MPD Commander Kimberly Chisley-Missouri wrote:

Just after 9pm units received a call for gunshots then a man down on Sheridan St. While canvassing, a deceased male subject was located in the 900 blk of Sheridan St NW suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. There is no suspect lookout at this time and Detectives from the Violent Crimes Branch are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.

A DC Alert was issued in connection with the shooting for a black male wearing a black hoodie, camo pants and black shoes.

Shooting Victim IDed as Lamont William Hall

MPD has identified the man found dead near Truxton Circle just after midnight as 32-year-old Lamont William Hall.

Hall, of Southeast D.C., was found unconscious in the 200 block of Bates Street Northwest with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
