Darryl Matthews Released from Halfway House in Hayes Osei Dennis Murder Case

Darryl Matthews was ordered released Friday from a halfway house where he was held while a grand jury investigates a charge that he fatally stabbed 60-year-old Hayes Osei Dennis in July 2012.

Matthews has now been placed in the court’s High Intensity Supervision Program and is required to live with his parents, wear a GPS monitoring bracelet and partake in weekly drug tests.

Judge Russell Canan granted the defense’s motion for the release after hearing testimony that Matthews had behaved well at the halfway house.

Herbert Hayes Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison for John Griffin Murder

Judge Russell Canan sentenced Herbert Hayes to 40 years in prison for the May 2012 stabbing death of John Wesley Griffin. The sentencing was a significant and substantial departure from guidelines which recommended 15 to 26 years in prison.

You’ve just been committing violent crimes for 25 years,” Canan told Hayes Friday. “I have no confidence at all that you will ever change your ways.”

I can’t stop crying!! I was sitting In my window Tuesday night I heard the shoot. I heard a young girl screaming. I ran around the corner and they tried to save him. Even as the ambulance rode pass they still were trying to save him. Another one of our youth cut down in the streets for nonsense. My heart is so weary from this experience..I can only imagine how his family feels. RIP I pray that all the young black men in Eagles Crossing realize that on any given day..That too can be there fate..Plz go to school and leave these streets alone!!PLEASe!!

Deangelo Williams Charged with First-Degree Murder in Shooting Death of Lucki Pannell

Deangelo Williams was arraigned Friday on charges of first-degree murder while armed, assault and related weapons offenses in connection with the 2011 shooting death of 18-year-old Lucki Pannell. Williams pleaded innocent to all charges and remains held pending a status hearing November 6.

On February 19, 2011 at around 7:00 pm police found Pannell shot in front of her home in the 3000 block of Sherman Avenue Northwest. Two men were found shot nearby. Pannell later died at a local hospital.

Immanuel Swann Pleads Guilty to Voluntary Mansluaghter for Olijawon Griffin Death

Immanuel Swann pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed, and two counts of armed robbery Thursday in connection with the stabbing death of 18-year-old Olijawon Emmanuel Griffin. Prosecutors dropped initial charges of felony murder, conspiracy and assault.

Swann is the sixth person to plead guilty in this case, and the second this week. A trial is expected to begin Monday for the three remaining co-defendants.

The Navy Yard Shooting: What We Know Now

It was the single largest loss of life in D.C. since 1982. Now, nearly three days after 13 people were killed at Washington’s Navy Yard, including the alleged shooter, details are beginning to emerge about what may have brought the gunman there, what happened once he entered Building 197, and who the victims are.

The shooting brings the number of those killed in mass shootings this year to 40, according to the Huffington Post. But closer to home there is a different number in mind: 81. That’s the number of people killed in DC this year, including Awele Olisemeka and Robert Spencer, each also killed this week. Read more

Robert Spencer, 21, Killed in SW DC Shooting Tuesday Night


A 21-year-old Northeast DC man was killed in a shooting in Southwest DC Tuesday night.

MPD said the man, identified as Robert Spencer, was found unconscious with a gunshot wound in the 100 Block of Irvington Street at about 10:22 p.m. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Stanley Moghalu and Johnnie Harris Found Innocent in Steven Moore Murder

After four weeks of deliberations, jurors in the “21st and Vietnam” murder trial on Tuesday found Stanley Moghalu and Johnnie Harris innocent of murder and firearms charges in connection with the December 2011 shooting death of Steven Moore.

The verdict was a partial one; Anthony Hatton still faces murder charges in connection with the August 2011 shooting death of Tyrell Fogle and Jekwan Smith still faces murder charges for the September 2011 shooting of Isaiah Sheffield.

All four men in the case still face conspiracy charges.

Gary Maye Pleads Guilty in Connection with Olijawon Griffin Murder

Gary Maye pleaded guilty Tuesday in connection with the stabbing death of 18-year-old Olijawon Griffin at the Woodley Park Metro Station in Nov. 2012.

Indicted on felony murder, armed robbery, conspiracy, and other charges, Maye reached a plea deal with the government on charges of voluntary manslaughter while armed and armed robbery.

Maye was one of nine young people suspected in the attack on Griffin. Five of them have now pleaded guilty, including two unidentified juveniles, and Deon Jefferson and Muquan Cawthorne.

Awele Olisemeka Identified as Victim of Fatal Assault

An assault Saturday evening in Northwest DC killed 24-year-old Awele Olisemeka, MPD said in a press release Tuesday evening.

On September 14, police officers found Olisemeka unconscious in 900 block of Madison Street NW after responding to a report of aggravated assault. Olisemeka was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition and diagnosed with multiple skull fractures.

Two days later, on September 16, Olisemeka was pronounced dead at approximately 4:40 p.m.
