Update: 13 Dead in Navy Yard Shooting, Including Shooter

UPDATE 10:15 p.m.
Mayor Vincent Gray provided details this evening on those killed at Navy Yard Monday, saying that the twelve victims are all between the ages of 46 and 73 years. At least one is confirmed to be a DC resident, MPD Chief Cathy Lanier said.

Seven families have been notified, Gray said.

The shooting shut down much of the area around the Navy Yard for about 14 hours. At about 10:15 p.m. Lanier said the shelter in place order had been lifted.

That order had been maintained while authorities sought a possible second shooter. Lanier said that that search had been based on “multiple witness accounts,” but that investigative efforts were exhausted and the search suspended. She said the deceased gunman, Aaron Alexis, is now believed to have acted alone.

We now feel comfortable we have the single and sole person responsible for the loss of life,” she said.

In addition to the 12 shooting victims and the deceased shooter, Gray said that eight people were injured, three of whom were shot. Others suffered stress and fall injuries, chest pain, and other injuries. Gray said the wounded MPD officer, Scott Williams, was “doing well and in great spirits.”

Williams is a veteran officer and works in the K-9 unit, Lanier said.

UPDATE 6:15 p.m.
The investigation into today’s deadly shooting at the Navy Yard in Southeast DC will continue throughout the night, at least until the last person being sought is found or cleared of any responsibility.

That’s according to DC Mayor Vincent Gray and MPD Chief Cathy Lanier, speaking at a press conference Monday evening, 10 hours after one or more gunman opened fire at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters killing 12 people.

After three weeks of deliberating, jurors in the “21st and Vietnam” murder trial announced partial verdicts Wednesday morning on two of the four defendants, but the judge assigned to the case refused to accept their ruling when jurors on one of the verdicts did not appear to be unanimous and the other verdict was read in a confusing manner.

But when it came to his stepson’s shooting, Page seemed to place blame on his family, and claimed he was being attacked by Satcher and that he shot him in self-defense. “I did not kill Nicholas,” Page said. “The situation was brought on by Nicholas, and his actions killed him.”

The Washington Post has a feature this morning on David Lee Robinson, killed in a robbery in January 2012.

Write Post reporter Paul Duggan:

Victims who aren’t perceived as innocent tend to draw scant public notice or sympathy, and the shooting of David Robinson appalled the civic conscience only briefly, owing to the dismal particulars of the crime: He had died in a gunfight after being robbed of his new Nike sneakers.

Melvin Linkins Released in Marc Emilio Dancy Murder Case After Probable Cause Not Found

Melvin Linkins was ordered released from D.C. jail Friday after Judge Herbert Dixon ruled there was not enough evidence to proceed in the case charging Linkins with the death of 37-year-old D.C. firefighter Marc Emilio Dancy.

A spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office said the case remains under investigation.

Dancy was found dead in the vestibule of an apartment building in the 3000 block of 7th Street Northeast on January 23, 2011, at around 8:00 a.m. An initial autopsy revealed the cause of death was blunt force trauma; the manner of death was ruled as undetermined.
