Samuel Nelson Sentenced to 13 Years in Fatal Stabbing of Darnell Howard

Judge Robert Morin sentenced Samuel Nelson to 13 years and 4 months in prison Friday for the death of his friend, Darnell Howard, last year.

“I myself wish things would’ve went a different way than they did,” Nelson said. The fact that he knew their family made it more difficult, Nelson said.

“I’ve known them for years,” Nelson said. “Before I even knew what drugs was.”

Doctors Say Gary Montgomery Competent to Stand Trial

Doctors at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where Gary Montgomery has been held for mental evaluation since Jan. 29, have told Judge Robert Morin that Montgomery, suspected in the stabbing death 23-year-old JaParker Deoni Jones, is mentally competent to stand trial.

But Montgomery’s attorneys may push for further studies, saying that Montgomery’s reported lucid behavior with doctors has not been experienced by his attorneys.

I Think About it All the Time,’ Quindetta Cosby Says at Sentencing for Fatal Stabbing

Judge Thomas Motley sentenced Quindetta Cosby Friday to 16 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 49-year-old Paul Lawrence Morris.

Cosby, 49, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder moments after the stabbing when police found Morris lying on a porch in the 300 block of Bryant Street Northeast. Cosby was standing nearby, holding a knife covered in blood.

Cosby wiped the tears from her eyes Friday as she addressed the court at the sentencing hearing.

“I’d like to apologize to the Morris family,” Cosby said. “I’d also like to ask for their forgiveness because I truly didn’t mean to do it. I was under the influence of drugs. I regret it every day; I think about it all the time.”

Anthony Campbell Indicted in 2011 Murder of Antwain Henderson

Anthony Campbell was indicted Wednesday on a charge of first-degree murder while armed in connection with the death of Antwain Henderson. Campbell was also charged with evidence tampering and two firearms offenses in the case; he pled innocent to all charges Friday.

Prosecutors allege that Campbell shot and killed Henderson on Aug. 31, 2011, because he was angry that Henderson told people that Campbell was an informant on a charge that Henderson was convicted of in 2003.

Dianna Lalchan Held in a Halfway House on Voluntary Manslaughter Charge

Judge Robert Morin ruled Wednesday that there was probable cause to hold Dianna Lalchan, 27, at a halfway house on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of her husband, Christopher Lalchan, last week.

Prosecutors had pursued first-degree murder charges in the case. Defense attorneys argued Wednesday that the killing was in self-defense.

In making his finding of voluntary manslaughter, Judge Robert Morin said Wednesday that “even if [Dianna Lalchan] acted in self-defense, the force was excessive.”

Witness Testifies James Fells Shot and Killed Christopher Freeman Without Provocation

A months-long dispute between James Fells and Christopher Emanuel Freeman ended in a shooting that left Freeman dead and sent another man in the hospital with serious injuries, prosecutors told a jury Tuesday.

Fells, who has also used the name James Fields, is charged with first-degree murder and several assault and weapons charges in connection with Freeman’s death.

Police found Freeman, 28, lying face-up in an alley around 3:30 a.m. Aug. 5, 2011. Seven 9mm cartridge casings were scattered around the scene. Police also found an empty sawed-off shotgun hidden in the bushes 15 feet from Freeman’s body; no shotgun shells were recovered. Read more

In brief:

A shooting in Southwest D.C. early Thursday killed Christopher S. Lalchan. His wife, Dianna Yvone Lalchan, was arrested and ordered held Friday on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the case.

Irving Jones Jr., 33, was killed in a shooting in Northeast DC early Saturday morning. No arrests have been announced in connection with the case.

Police released surveillance video Thursday of two persons of interest in the fatal shooting of Paul Aime Tanoh Danzo outside a downtown nightclub last week.

ABC 7 News aired an interview Monday with Albrecht Muth from his hospital room at United Medical Center.

Judge Karen Howze ordered Darryl Matthews held Wednesday in connection with the 2012 stabbing death of taxi driver Hayes Osei Dennis. Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force officers arrested Dennis Tuesday.

A grand jury indicted Grant Johnson for his role in the 2012 death of Ricardo Lancaster.

NE DC Shooting Victim Identified as Irving Jones Jr.

A man killed in a shooting in Northeast DC early Saturday morning has been identified as 33-year-old Irving Jones Jr., according to a message from police on the Fifth District listserv.

Man Killed in Early Morning NE DC Shooting

WUSA reports that a man was shot and killed in Northeast DC shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.

A tweet from the DC firefighters union indicated that the man had been shot in the chest.
