Judge Finds Probable Cause in Case Against Steven Williams

Judge Robert Morin found probable cause to hold Steven Williams Monday.

Williams, 46, is accused of killing 65-year-old shopkeeper June Grace Lim June 14.

Officers arrested him August 23 on a parole violation, but later found DNA evidence linking him to Lim’s murder. Williams’ DNA matched with DNA found on the holster of the handgun allegedly used to kill Lim, and from the inside of Lim’s cash register, according to court documents. Read more

A shooting in Southeast DC on Sunday night killed 20-year-old Jeffrey Ray Tyson, MPD said Monday morning.

In brief:

A fatal Metrobus shooting ended with the suspect’s suicide in Hempstead, N.Y. Authorities say Selina Brown died in the doorway of a Metrobus in Southeast D.C Sunday evening. Her boyfriend and the father of her child, Javon Steven Foster, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday.

Joseph Chandler, who police say shot his girlfriend, 63-year-old Shirley Renee Tucker, earlier this month, made his first court appearance and was ordered held without bond. Chandler was hospitalized for several days after he complained of chest pains.

Judge Thomas Motley ordered Dennis Washington held for trial  Tuesday in the beating death of Thomas Lipscomb.

Judge William Jackson sentenced Charles Coates to 33 years behind bars after he was convicted in a September trial of killing his cousin, Eddie A. Leonard Jr., in a dispute over a $200 cable bill.

Two men were sentenced for their role in the 2011 fatal shooting of Demetrius Thompson aboard a W4 Metrobus. Delron Atchison was sentenced to 30 years in prison, while his accomplice Vincent Gray received a 21-year sentence.

Judge Robert Morin sentenced Eric Foreman, now 18, to 42 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of Catholic University of America graduate student Neil Godleski.

 

Ellsworth Colbert’s Attorney Son Seeks to Represent Father

A DC attorney whose father is suspected of murder may be allowed to try the case in front of a jury early next year.

Ellsworth Colbert‘s son, Damon Colbert, has signed on to his father’s case as co-counsel. Prosecutors oppose Damon Colbert’s representation. On Friday Judge Thomas Motley appeared skeptical of the effort as well.

Ellsworth Colbert is accused of stabbing Robert Wright in March. At a preliminary hearing that same month, MPD Detective Kenniss Weeks testified that investigators believe Wright and Colbert began fighting when Wright’s pitbull may have strayed into Colbert’s yard.

Raymond Faunteroy Pleads Innocent in Death of Derrick Ragland

Raymond Faunteroy pled innocent Friday to first-degree murder while armed and two weapons charges in connection with the shooting death of Derrick Ragland.

Ragland was gunned down in the 1000 block of Taylor Street Northeast on Dec. 19, 2011.

42 Year Prison Sentence for Eric Foreman in Shooting of Neil Godleski

Eric Foreman was sentenced today to 42 years in prison for the shooting death of Catholic University graduate student Neil Godleski.

The sentence means Foreman, now 18, could be 60 years old before he is released. Prosecutors had asked Judge Robert Morin to consider a sentence of life without the possibility of parole, or failing that, 60 years in prison. Morin declined, saying that such a sentence would be too harsh given Foreman’s young age and bipolar disorder.

I regret that it ever happened,” Delron Atchison says at Metro Bus Murder Sentencing

Delron Atchison was sentenced today to 30 years in prison for his role in the 2011 fatal shooting of Demetrius Thompson, which took place aboard a crowded W4 Metrobus. Atchison’s accomplice, Vincent Gray, was sentenced to 21 years.

Atchison begged for leniency as he wept before Judge Thomas Motley in a crowded courtroom Friday.

“I cry over the situation, I pray for Thompson’s kids and family and I accept responsibility for my actions,” Atchison said. “I regret that it ever happened. I’m asking for a second chance.”

Charles Coates Sentenced to 33 Years in Cousin’s Death

Judge William Jackson sentenced Charles Coates to 33 years in prison Friday for a 2011 shooting that killed Eddie A. Leonard Jr., Coates’ cousin.

A jury found Coates guilty of second-degree murder and three related weapons charges in September. Prosecutors argued that Coates led Leonard to an alley behind the 400 block of 24th Street Northeast in a dispute over $200 Coates needed to pay his cable bill.
