Jury Deliberations Begin in Graduation Go-Go Party Shooting

It was supposed to be a celebratory night. And, until the gunshots rang out, it was.

At the Go-Go themed graduation party teens chatted, danced, and goofed off for photos with friends. A variety of neighborhood bands played in the church rec room rented for the event.

Everybody was partying, having a good time,” a Roosevelt High School 10th grader remembered this week.

It was noisy, like a party, there was dancing,” recalled another student.

But the party was shut down that June evening after a scuffle between two neighborhood groups broke out, and the “hyped” teens spilled out of the rec room and onto Georgia Avenue. Some started to make their way home, others lingered, chatting and drinking in a nearby McDonald’s parking lot.

Then shots rang out.

Sixteen-year-old Jamal Bell crumpled to the sidewalk.

Near him, two others lay wounded.

Today, nearly two years after that June 2010 graduation party, jurors were scheduled to begin deliberations in the case against Zachary Sims, the teen prosecutors say fired those gunshots on June 18, 2010.

Dwayne Brisbon was killed in an early morning stabbing on Florida Avenue Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, Lamont Davore was killed in a stabbing near Kenilworth Avenue and Quarles Street NE. Police have arrested 33-year-old David Bolden.

A little more than two weeks after his arrest, Keyon Caldwell pled guilty to one charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed in the shooting death of Draynell Paul Henderson.

Dietrich Baker, a 23-year-old Northeast DC man, was arrested on Sunday in connection with the shooting death of James Ray Sherrod on April 28 on Kenilworth Terrace NE. Baker was ordered held pending a preliminary hearing.

Terrell Brent was sentenced to three years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the accidental shooting death of Lugus Fleming. The two teens were playing Russian Roulette when Brent shot and killed Fleming.

The deaths of two 19-year-old DC men have been determined to be “justified” by MPD and will not be included in this year’s count of homicide victims.  Stephen Horsley and Dalontray Williams were killed in separate incidents two weeks apart in January.

More than seven years after his death, police still have no leads in the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Donte Manning in Columbia Heights.

On Saturday MPD Chief Cathy Lanier was on Morse Street in Trinidad handing out fliers about Melvin Seals’ death four years ago. A $50,000 reward is offered in the case.
