20 Year Sentence in Killing of DC Falcons Manager

Oma Crawford was sentenced this morning to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of Ralph Thomas, manager of the semi-profesional football team the DC Falcons.

Crawford pleaded guilty to the shooting in July, proffering that on June 3 he brought a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol in a bag to the Falcons` practice at McKinley Technology High School.

Delay in Joseph Alonzo Sharps Murder Prosecution after Kwan Kearney’s Brother Killed

A new trial date has been set for Kwan Kearney after his brother, a witness in his case, was killed.

Kearney was expected to stand trial on Oct. 31. He is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Joseph Alonzo Sharps Jr.

But just this week Kearney’s brother, Eric Kearney, was killed in a shooting in Truxton Circle. Read more

Antonio Jones Arrested in Shooting Death of Davon Gray

Antonio Jones, a 19-year-old Maryland man has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder while armed in the shooting death of Davon Gray.

One Dead, One Arrested in Fatal SE DC Stabbing


A 30-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Southeast DC late Thursday night, according to MPD homicide detectives.

The victim has been identified as Jodie Ward. A 30-year-old woman is in custody in connection with the case. She’s been identified as Felicia Jones.

A trial is due to start Monday in the September 2010 shooting death of 31-year-old Laroy Bryant on Hartford Street in Southeast. Katrell Henry, 36, is suspected of first-degree murder while armed in the case. Judge Lynn Leibovitz will preside.

Phillip Crooms is also expected for a preliminary hearing with Judge Leibovitz. Crooms is suspected of felony murder in the death of Delonte Butler on Sept. 25, 2010. In an earlier hearing Aug. 12, Leibovitz asked prosecutors to clarify Butler’s cause of death.

These were two children. Boys who had been getting away with little petty inappropriate behaviors for years. Our system sets our young men up for prison life by allowing them to get away with stuff until they are old enough to trap them. Derek is not a bad person and yet his life is over because of a decision made at 17. He is not a man. He is not an adult. Read more

Demetrius Thompson was “not one of those people”

The Washington Post interviewed the mother of Demetrius Emmanuel Thompson, killed just before midnight last night aboard the W4 Metro Bus in Southeast:

The news shocked Thompson’s family as they gathered in Talaya Thompson’s Fairfax Village home Thursday to recall the soft-spoken son, nephew and brother they called “D,” known for his megawatt smile. Talaya Thompson was so determined to keep violence away from her children that she didn’t allow them to have even toy water guns. Read more

Jekwan Dante Smith Arrested in Shooting Death of Isaiah Sheffield

A 20-year-old Southeast D.C. man was arrested today in connection with the fatal shooting of Isaiah Sheffield in Northeast D.C. last month.

Jekwan Dante Smith is suspected of first-degree murder while armed in connection with the case, MPD said.

Surveillance Video Shows Men Boarding Metro Bus Just Before Shooting

MPD has released surveillance video from the bus just prior to this morning’s shooting, which killed 22-year-old Demetrius Thompson.

MPD hopes that the public will view the video and help identify two people pictured on it boarding the bus just before the shooting.
