Reward in Ebony Franklin Homicide

Prince Okorie

Kathryn Gaglione, a public relations manager in Alexandria, wrote on her blog yesterday about 16-year-old Prince Okorie, who was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood.

What this article fails to mention is that Prince was known and loved by many people. Not only did I work with him in a tutoring program, but I attended the same church congregation, I know his family, and I see how this tragedy is leaving those who cared about Prince in shock.Read more

Washington Times Ties Youth Murders to DYRS

The Washington Times has run an excellent series over the past several weeks examining D.C. youths who are wards of the city and have been involved in crime.

Tonight reporters Jeffery Anderson and Matthew Cella published their latest finds: 16-year-old Prince Okorie, who was shot in the head and killed Tuesday afternoon in Petworth, had been in the care of a DYRS shelter since Nov. 9. And Ebony Franklin, the 17-year-old Prince George’s County girl whose body was found stabbed and stuffed in a trash bin in Columbia Heights on Monday, had worked with youth-outreach counselors for more than a year.

Franklin was not a ward of DYRS and Okorie, though in the care of DYRS, had not been committed to them, the Times added.Read more

Rickey Pharr to be Tried in Shooting Death of Angelo Jones

A D.C. judge ruled today that 26-year-old Rickey “Packie” Pharr will stand trial for the death of Angelo Jones, who was shot and killed during a craps game in the Clay Terrace neighborhood of D.C. Oct. 2.

Judge Herbert Dixon said it was the account of a witness, who described Pharr telling a group of people moments after the shooting “I just slumped a n–,” that contributed to the court’s belief that there is “substantial probability” that Pharr was referring to and is responsible for Jones’ death.Read more

Help HWDC

HWDC has been live online for a little more than two months now. This project is a labor of love: I’m a freelance reporter here in D.C. and when I went to local news sources for information when crimes were happening in my neighborhood I didn’t find what I needed. I decided to do something about that.

You can learn more about our goals with HWDC on the About page and by looking around the site. We’re publishing developing details from cases, court documents, photos, links, obituaries, memorial information, a court calendar and more.

If HWDC has helped you, or if you believe like we do that every victim deserves to be remembered, every case needs to be followed, I invite you to help. We have a fundraising effort underway at Spot.Us, a crowd-sourced journalism funding site. You can donate to this project by contributing cash or taking a quick and anonymous marketing survey.
